New York- A new refreshing experience

After the long multiplex- producer strike here comes a respite to our very own bollywood which has suffered a huge financial blow in the past few months. And who else better than Yash raj films to come up with the bail-out honours. Their latest venture New York comes out as a refreshing experience and you move out of the theatre with a serious thought.

Directed by Kabir Khan of Kabul Express fame, New York deals with the plight of Muslims in the US post 9/11. It tells us about trauma and the pain of the individuals who underwent the inhuman torture at the detention centres. The movie begins with Omar( Neil Nitin Mukesh) being detained by the FBI on account of illegal possession of arms which is found in his car. Roshan(Irfan Khan), the investigating officer asks Omar to reveal details of his stay in US which dates back to the lush green campus of New York State University in 1999 where the latter came in through a scholarship from Delhi.
Omar tells Roshan tells us how he met two of is best buddies in college Maya(Katrina Kaif) and Sameer aka Sam(John Abraham). He also reveals about his feelings he had for Maya, who inturn loved Sam and this forces Omar to move out of their lives and settle in Philedelphia.
Agent Roshan tells Omar that Sam is a suspected terrorist and that he runs a terrorist cell. Omar is then sent into the lives of Sam and Maya who are now married, as an undercover FBI agent to gather evidences and inform the FBI about the activities of this terrorist cell run by Sam. Hence thanks to the FBI the three budddies of college reunite again.
Omar through his behaviour tries to instigate Sam so that his real face, that of a terrorist comes in front of him but eventually fails in all his attempts as he does not find any evidence against Sam which would prove that Sam is a terrorist. But just when you are close to the intermission you have a big shock in store. Sam actually admits to Omar that he infact is a terrorist and runs a terrorist cell. He also tells about the inhuman torture he underwnt at the detention centre post 9/11 which made him turn into a terrorist. And the rest is for you all to find out...
New York is a movie which has a heart at the right place. Though it has its own shortcomings in the form of some loop holes in the script and acting front and also in terms of slackening of pace in the second half it successfully covers all this by its positives.Kabir Khan as the director has done a fine job. Some of the scenes such as the detention centre torture are simply breathtaking. Dialogues by Sandeep Shrivastava are strong. Music by Pritham is passable.
On the acting front John does a terrefic job portraying the character of Sam. Katrina dissapoints as Maya as the role requires a much seasoned actress. Irfan is first rate as usual. But the surprise package comes in the form of Neil Nitin Mukesh who delivers a splendid performance as Omar. Way to go Neil.
On whole New York is a sincere attempt and does quite successfully pass on the message it actually wants to convey. Give it a watch....
